News of Khamtrul Rinpoche

Last year we had the wonderful opportunity of visiting Khamtrul Rinpoche’s new Monastery – Chime Gatsal Ling, outside of Dharmsala, and to also hear news about him from his translator Lozang Zopa. At that time he was living with his family in Dharamsala in order to receive regular kidney dialysis. He now spends most of his time in New Delhi where the dialysis facilities are more reliable.

During the period of time that Rinpoche was visiting Wisdom’s Goldenrod he was also engaged in the task of raising money for and building this wonderful monastery complex near Dharamsala where the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism could be further preserved and Rinpoche’s legacy passed on. The Monastery is beautiful and extensive and includes among its members three Tulku’s of various ages who are under Rinpoche’s tutelage. The website address is

We also had the opportunity to receive copies of Khamtrul Rinpoche’s autobiography: Memories of Lost and Hidden Lands: The Life Story of Garje Khamtrul Rinpoche.” It is a must must read. As much as we respected and revered the Rinpoche, reading the details of his life confirmed that he is a great being even more than we had imagined. In addition the events of his life are fascinating and the book reads almost like a novel, including details of his: discovery as a reincarnation, childhood and monastic training, visionary experiences, travels to sacred sites in the most remote parts of Tibet, work in support of Tibetan revolutionaries, close relationship with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and his work in India. The book is available from Wisdom Books:

Our visit to Dharamsala was primarily in order to spend time with two nuns from Dolma Ling Nunnery who we support. They will be among the first Tibetan Nuns in history to receive the Gesha-Ma degree, partly a result of the Dalai Lama’s efforts to open more opportunities for nuns, who can now receive Geshe training. If you are interested in this effort or in supporting a nun go to:

The Wisdom Goldenrod Community has been blessed to receive and have the attention of many great teachers and Garje Khamtrul Rinpoche can certainly be counted among them. Seeing these great ones brings with them memories of Anthony and PB and their legacy which we carry within us.
